My daughter is 9, and was recently diagnosed with OCD. She is in therapy and I thought this book might be a good companion to that. However, it is not useful in our situation, at all. I thought to write a Chapter by Chapter breakdown, for anyone else who wishes they could flip through the book and see what's in it before they buy.Chapters explaining what OCD is: 1 - 6 / Chapters giving Tools to Overcome OCD: 7 - 11 / Chapters offering Motivation: 12 - 14Chap 1 - "Are you Saving Junk?" - explains your brain is like a computer with a "glitch", where you cant tell "junk" thoughts apart from valid ones. Uses trash in its examples, which would be confusing to OCD kids who are hoarders (and cant tell the difference between trash and treasure).Chap 2 - "What is OCD?" - shortly explains "obsessive thoughts" and 'compulsive rituals". Spends a lot of time on what happens when you tell someone "NO" over and over (they stop).Chap 3 - "OCD Tricks" - explains OCD has 3 tricks: "false danger alarms", "maybe" signals where is hard to stop thinking "not likely, but maybe", and signals to repeat a ritualChap 4 - "Why kids get OCD" - again that the brain is a computer, with a tiny part misprogrammed. An OCD brain has "messaging (thought) problems" where kids feel the need to do something again and again.Chap 5 - "Is the Job too Big?" - you can overcome OCD by taking it one step at a timeChap 6 - "One more thing..." - explains fight or flight response, and how our thoughts determine whether we are scared or excited in a situation (roller coasters) and how our senses dull over time (like in a movie theater)Chap 7 - "1st Tool - I Spy" - recognizing OCD thoughtsChap 8 - "2nd Tool - Talk Back" - tell OCD thoughts "NO". Her OCD includes a lot of avoidance behavior, and "what if..." thoughts. She is doing CBT therapy to confront the feelings that make her want to avoid situations and places. This book did not offer any thought strategies, or much in the way of OCD obsessions.

So a confession is that this book was for me, an adult. I bought a bunch of OCD books and this was really great at simplifying OCD (for your partners or family who may not understand how you're feeling) and giving simple steps to combat it. No over complications and enough information to actually help me. For me, it was super helpful and will compliment the other books I've received. A definite high recommendation.

Please consider this book for your child with OCD/tics. Drug/therapy were not able to give our son the knowledge and tools that this book has given us. It has been the life changer that we were so desperately seeking. We literally went from many debilitating months of multiple full body tics and an OCD mindset 100% of the time to reading this book one week and putting it into practice the next (without our prompting). I feel like we accomplished months of therapy in the week it took us to read this book. We have had two weeks of 90% normalcy with a few tics or OCD habits here and there (for those of you who have been there, this is a BIG DEAL). I don't believe he is "cured" at all, but this book has given our son the knowledge of what OCD is, why he has it and that he is not a victim and he can TAKE CONTROL. The message clicked with him and he is KICKING OCD"s butt on a daily basis. Our son is back and I could not be more grateful for this book. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

I thought this book would focus on OCD intrusive thoughts, but it more focused on other forms of OCD. It's a good book but not what we needed.

I am a therapist specializing in OCD treatment. I am one of the few in our area who will treat children. The children that I have shared this book with are happy to recognize their own "stuck" thoughts in the illustrated pages. I have had adults purchase the book as well because it simplifies and clarifies an oftentimes misunderstood and debilitating disorder. I especially love how the OCD monster is pictures as a furry little creature with bad teeth and a top hat. He peeks around chairs, hides out, gorges on candy bars, and generally makes life miserable for kids with OCD. But when a child challenges the monster, there is an illustration of him jumping in the air in terror himself, as now a child is empowered and talks back to the monster. This change in behavior rattles the monster and he retreats because the child is no longer playing by the monster's rules. I actually had a 10 year old client get a monster doll to place in another chair and talk to.This book visually is appealing and its text simplifies for young and old that the tricks of the OCD monster can be foiled with cognitive behavioral therapy. It's a good workbook because children can draw in it and answer questions. I highly recommend this book, in fact, I think its my favorite of all the many books on OCD that I have collected. Of course, my hero Fred Penzel cannot be topped with the incredible information and examples shared in his book, and Jonathan Grayson's is full of beneficial information as well. Don't forget Bruce Hyman and Cherry Pedrick with the OCD workbook, another outstanding reference and a way for an OCD sufferer without qualified therapists in the area where he or she lives, to do self work on ERP in order to talk back to the monster and regain freedom in life.

We bought this book hoping it would help with our 4 year old. We sat down with her and the book, read a little bit out of it, and by the next day we started seeing an improvement. Granted it wasn't anything large, but we did notice that she was communicating more with us while she was struggling. Almost a month later she is almost a different child. We find her looking through the book at the pictures, we ask what's she doing and she tells us, "I'm looking through my book, it helps get my brain unstuck." My only regret is that We didn't buy this book two years ago.
