"I'm a Stranger Here Myself" is a collection of columns by Bill Bryson printed in England for an English audience. Most of them are amusing anecdotes on life in America, and especially wistful recalling of life in America as he knew it twenty years ago contrasted with the present day. In his world, the present generally is inferior, though there is quite a bit of self doubting in his opinion pieces (notably especially when discussing motels and drive-in movies) and occasionally praise for modernity (look hard.)When he sticks to wry commentary on humorous topics (the IRS, computers, customer service, etc.) he is hilarious; kind of a more urbane Dave Barry. I was on a few occasions irritated with the book, and each time it was on one of two topics: air travel or immigration. He has nothing good to say about traveling by plane (and sometimes I would agree with him), and he goes to great lengths, for instance, to complain that he arrived at an airport with no photo ID, and had difficulty getting on the plane. (Who travels by plane without a photo ID?) In fact on several occasions he blames others for misfortunes caused patently by his own (frequently admitted) ineptness, ignorance, or forgetfulness. I find it perfectly reasonable that if you show up for a flight with no photo ID, that you don't get on the plane. He took the attitude that the security forces were inept, loser idiots who should have known who he was, and clearly should have made an exception for him, a celebrity. He goes as far as to contrast this to the UK where he relates a tale of a customs agent telling him to lie to get into the country and praising him for his efficiency. This truly rubbed me the wrong way, and I hope he would not have been so foolish to write that after 9/11. He is also goes off on a rant against people opposed to immigration in the US, saying that so little of the country is built up that we should, essentially, let anyone that wants to come in feel welcome. Mind you, this is the same guy who, just a few pages away who laments how built up the country is getting and how terrible it is. Nobody noticed this seeming contradictory position during editing, for some reason. He also thinks that it is unreasonable to deny benefits to illegal aliens, ignoring that in the state of Arizona alone, the cost of medical care for illegals is almost $1 Billion (of US taxpayer dollars) annually, and that in the Southwest an enormously disproportionate amount of crime is the work of illegals. I realize his wife is English, and I appreciate his toils to get her into the country legally, but to impugn that anyone opposed to illegal immigration is a cretin, is ignorant at best and insulting at worst. Hey, Bill, one more time: unlike your wife, the vast majority of immigration foes are talking about people here ILLEGALLY!Having said that, overall I liked the book, and will almost certainly buy more Bryson books. Some of the gems are truly worth reading and re-reading, particularly the address he gave to a high school graduation. I think it's worth four stars, and it would have been worth five easily if it wasn't for some of the pompous self-righteousness in a couple of the chapters. Read it and decide for yourself.

Back in pre-Kindle days, I always picked up a copy of the latest Bill Bryson book at the library and loved them all. This is one I missed, so I was delighted to be able to pick it up on sale for two bucks. Even a cheapskate like me will part with a measly two dollars for Bryson. Although it's now an amazing 15 years old (amazing to me, since 2000 seems like yesterday) it's as fresh and funny as if he wrote it last week. The names of politicians change, but not the things they do that leave us shaking our heads. If we no longer have VCR's to bedevil us, new and equally evil devices take their place. Life goes on and we are pulled along with it until we croak.What is it about Bryson that makes him stand out? He's intelligent and observant and funny (obviously) but I think the thing that makes his books so enduringly appealing is that he seems so damned NICE. He's got that mid-western farm boy thing going for him, although he was raised in Des Moines and the child of two writers. In light of some of the recent revelations about much-loved celebrities who weren't at all what they seemed, I'm wondering it he's just too good to be true. I guess we'll find out eventually. Either he'll go quietly to his grave with no scandal or the crap will hit the fan and we'll all wonder how we could have been so naive.But I know one thing. If he's above ground, he'll write about whatever happens and it will be thoughtful and beautifully expressed and wet-your-pants funny. And I'm going to read it.

“I’m a Stranger Here Myself” is the 3rd Bill Bryson book I’ve read. The other two books (“A Short History of Nearly Everything” and “One Summer -- America 1927”) taught you something – but did so with a wonderful sense of humor, too. This book has the humor, but is more reflective than educational – and so just seemed to have less “meat” on its “bones”. Also, be warned that, since the book is simply a collection of articles that Bryson wrote for a British newspaper (back in the 1990’s, by the way), each chapter is very short (about 5 minutes reading time) and the articles are more directed at a British audience than an American audience.

This is generally funny, though one has to take into consideration how dated it is. I found particularly shocking, his dismissal of the effects of second hand smoke in the chapter "The Risk Factor" Since the 90s a great deal more scientific data has brought forth evidence of the effects of second hand smoke. This particular passage read like a personal justification.I enjoyed the retro take on US life and products, and this should be at least enough fun for those of us of the older set. It has interesting historical references.If you haven't read A Walk In the Woods I would pick that up first.

If you saw "Walk in the Woods" movie with Robert Redford (as Bill Bryson) and Nick Nolte, you will love this book. You will be laughing through every page. Bryson id the best storyteller for those of us who travel, whether in the U.S. or Europe. Again, it is hilarious because it is so true and because Bryson tells it so well. See the "Walk in the Woods" movie too. You will laugh yourself sick through it - especially if you are reaching your mid to late 50s and contemplating what adventures to put on your bucket list.

I read my first Bill Bryson book. A Walk in the Woods, when it was first published and have been a fan ever since. I recently began acquiring them on my Kindle and reading them again, and they are still enjoyable.Bill Bryson has an interesting perspective on two cultures. Born in the U.S., moving to Britain in his 20s, and thenmoving back to the U.S. after 20 years, he esentially gets to be an outsider in his native country as he tries to the changes in that have occurred his home country in the two decades he has been away. The book is essentially a collection of weekly columns he wrote that were published back in Britain. They range between funny and poignant, but are all well written end will leave you smiling.

I love this book. It's even better than the blurb/cover and that's saying something since the blurb sounds awesome and the cover is gorgeous.My favorite thing about this book is definitely the characters. The authors are able to bring them to life perfectly so it's easy to "watch" them move from moment to moment and it's easy to identify with Stasha.My only complaints about the book are minor. For one: I don't think the cover accurately depicts Stasha since we're told multiple times that she's underfed and scrawny to the point of counting her ribs even after her transition. Second: I think the name of the book is misleading. "The Fire Thief" along with the blurb makes it seem like somehow her powers are stolen by her or for her, however the instances of thievery are so tiny that calling her a thief would probably insult Kaz and the Crew at the Crow Club.But honestly, those complaints are minor when compared to the awesomeness of this book. I already can't wait to be able to read Book 2!*I received an ARC of this book from a review group, NOT the author, and my review/rating is honest and entirely my own opinion*

A good series beginner with a great ending that will have you coming back for more. It’s well-written, a real action-packed quick pace read. The sarcastic humor and adventure kept me hooked from the very beginning to end. It has a great plot and characters with some awesome twists, suspense, and mystery. An incredible page-turner that will leave you on the edge of your seat. I love strong take charge heroines and the author gives us that and more. Stasha, growing up as an orphan learned to be a very cunning, brave fighter and a real powerhouse that everyone wishes to use like a weapon. Her unwavering friendship and loyalty to her best friend Klaus interferes with their wishes for her but she will never give up on her best friend even if it means breaking into a prison that no one has ever escaped from dubbed the Death Camp. Stasha’s impatience and pride gets her in a lot of trouble one of which is a bargain she has made with a Tiyanak, creatures known to covet power. Captain Radomir, a lackey for the King of Pyreack, is responsible for her good friend being taken to the prison Angharad. Luckily, she has the help of the handsome powerful fae Prince Averin, a Zephyr, and his sidekicks with additional support from the Princess Boadicea of Ocea. As she sees to the safety of Klaus and her people, they will see to the safety of their greatest hope. I can’t wait to see what happens next.I received a free advanced copy of this book and am leaving my voluntary review.

As always, Gwynn and Erin write a beautifully crafted story. It gripped me from the very beginning and I had a hard time putting it down. I literally didn't put it down until I'd finished it! The characters are bold but caring, fierce when they need to be, gentle and empathetic. It is truly one of the best books I've read in a long time! The heroine,Stasha is a complex personality, struggling to survive in a horrific environment. She is a fiercely loyal friend and will stop at nothing to help those deserving or less fortunate. Gwynn allows her characters to develop, so that I i was drawn in, page by page. I'll be waiting on tinderhooks for the next book! It has all the elements a best seller should, exciting, compelling, endearing as well as a good dose of magic! Highly recommended read

The Fire Thief is book one of The Fire Thief series and has an amazing cover. I became involved in the story almost immediately after reading the first page. It has an engaging plot that moves at a good pace. The characters are very well developed and relatable. Stasha is an orphan that is terribly mistreated as she grew up. She has two friends that she is extremely loyal and fiercely protective of. Being attacked by Elves and one friend is killed and her other friend and herself are put in danger, Stasha comes into her powers which she had no idea she possessed. She now has to learn to use and control them if she is to keep her friend safe. I found this book to be difficult to put down and wanted to keep turning pages to the end. This is a wonderful story and one I highly recommend. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.

When one friend is killed by elves she becomes even more protective of her other one. But when they are put in danger Stasha’s life changes forever. She finds that she has power that comes out of her that she never knew about. As she has to learn how to use it and control it she has to work hard. Will she keep her friend safe as she learns? I liked her from the beginning and this was getting stronger and stronger while reading. The story is intriguing as there are different species and in those, there are different factions - that matters a lot here. Stasha has power; yes but what if it's uncontrollable? And she doesn't know anything about it!Power games here were really intriguing with all secondary main characters Alvein and Boa (i loved the way those two were written!This is book one of a really promising fantasy (romance - I hope there will be more in next books) series

The writing is quite good and the selection of the pictures was also good. The problem is that with the type of paper used and the very small size of the pictures ( if fails to convey the artistry of Ansel Adams. It is like looking at a Rembrandt painting reduced to a postcard. The pages are 8 x9.75 inches in size but there are landscape images that are 5.75 x 4.25 inches in size - i.e. postcard sized.Don't waste your money on this book but put it towards a full size reproduction to hand on your wall.

This is a beautiful book of Adams' National Parks images printed by his exclusive official publisher going back 40+ years, from vintage prints made by the master himself. Most AA 'National Parks' books by other publishers contain government reproductions of inferior quality--copy prints and/or prints by government workers from negatives in the National Archives. If you know anything about AA's darkroom craft you'll understand why these are in no way, shape or form "Ansel Adams photographs" in the true, art historical sense. Do yourself and the artist a favor and pass on these other, less expensive books. Spend a few extra dollars for an authentic product--one that does the images justice. High quality paper and printing is expensive, and this book is a real bargain considering.

This a great gift for an Ansel Adams fan. The collection of photos is great and the print quality is fantastic. Here is what would have made the book perfect:1) Bigger size: the current dimensions are a little too small to be a true coffee table book. For the price, I expected a little more.2) Inclusion of some technical details on how some of these photographs were taken would greatly appeal to the photography enthusiast.

I showed this in a first of a series about famous photographers who have left their thumb print on the world, our world, and us. The beautiful state parks we have today...may well have stemmed from Ansel's hunger and desire to show their beauty. This tells more than just pretty pictures of state parks...it also tells of a love of life!

I have ordered 6 of this exact book for our 4 Yosemite vacation rentals. They are a big hit with our guests from all over the world. I highly recommend this book. I have already had to replace one from use by our guests.

I first saw Ansel Adams photos in a History of Photography class in college long ago. As a kid from New York City, I was amazed at the magnificent landscapes that Adams captured with his camera. I read these National Geographic history books with my 4th grade son in the evenings. The pictures are great, the text is well written, informative, and we both learn something without it being ... dry. It is especially fun to talk about when the greats lived in relation to each other and other historical events.

I like the fact that it mentioned many of Leonardo's works in a few pages. I wish it had said a bit more, though. I expected a short book, I wanted it to be short, but not quite that short

Was a little challenging for 8 yr old to read alone. He found it difficult to stay interested. My husband who read it with him said it was a well done book.

I would buy more biographies from this author. Just enough info but not 'dumbed down' too much!

Most people know little about the roles of oxytocin and vasopressin. Scientists are now beginning to see and understand the effects of sexual involvement that can last a lifetime. Sex can and should be a positive experience. It should be the intimate interaction between two persons who care for each other. (p.18)The messenger chemical Dopamine makes a person feel good when he or she does something exciting or rewarding.But the beneficial effect of dopamine for the married couple is that it "addicts" them to sex with each other.Another neurochemical that is critically important to healthy sex and bonding is Oxytocin. While it is present in both genders, it is primarily active in females. (p. 35)When a couple is involved in even a short-term relationship and breaks up and then each moves on to a new sexual partner, they are breaking an oxytocin bond that has formed. This severing of the bond explains the incredibly painful emotions people often feel when they break up. Vasopressin seems to have two primary functions related to relationships--bonding of the man to his mate and attachment toy his offspring. Due to the remarkable structural similarity between oxytocin and vasopressin, it should come as no surprise that these two neurochemicals share similar activity. Often referred to as the "monogamy molecule," vasopressin seems to I be the primary cause of men attaching to women with whom they have close and intimate physical contact. The longer people are together, the stronger their bond can become. When that bond is broken, more damage is done than simply the loss of the relationship. The neurochemical imprint of that sexual experience remains, often for many years, impeding the very bonding process that leads to future healthy relationships. This book isn't just about 'being a missionary', it's about creating a lifestyle that is worthy of our walk.Sometimes it really does take the 'go-getter' to help other people grasp the hard realities. That's what this book is all about. Am I challenged to start opening up about my faith? Am I challenged to go to Asia or Africa and share God's Word? These are questions we really do need to ask. I think it's really worth reading the There Is No Plan B chapter at least twice. This will help us get the reality that David is after. I admit, I'm not completely finished reading this book, but I just read the There Is No Plan B chapter, but it made me want to write this review.David wants us to have 'missionary' minds, God wants us to have 'missionary' minds.Jesus really did say, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation". David isn't saying go plunk yourself into the remote tribes of Africa, he's saying we need to have this kind of mind-set with anyone and everyone. A tough read, a bit hard to get through, but very thorough as I suspect he needed to be. Anyway, all real scientists already know about the cambrian explosion. Meyer once again nails every last little detail to the wall and leaves no doubt, again well done.

Comment on “Darwin’s Doubt,” by Stephen C. MeyerI highly recommend reading this book. it isn't an easy read, but very interesting and well worth reading with an open mind.When Darwin wrote his famous 1859 treatise on the Origin of Species, there were two issues he glossed over: 1.) The origin of the first living cell, and 2.) The so-called Cambrian, or Silurian, explosion of complex animals. At the time, he, and scientists in general, knew nothing about the details of the functioning of a biological cell, but believed that life somehow originated in the chemical soup that supposedly existed early in the earth’s history. He also acknowledged that the sudden emergence of the Cambrian era animals cast great doubt on his theory of evolution through random mutations and natural selection over long periods of time. However, he expected that later discoveries of fossils would show ancestors of the Cambrian animals in earlier geological strata.Since Crick and Watson deduced the structure of DNA in 1953, based on then-recent work of many biological scientists, science has come to understand that the work of DNA, RNA, and other molecular structures in a living cell is based on highly complex functionally specific code. In his earlier book, “The Signature in the Cell,” Dr. Meyer, citing the work of many modern biological scientists, mathematicians and others, showed that for such complexity to have arisen by chance arrangement of the nucleotide building blocks of life would have required many times the number of available chances in the life of the universe. The post log to the latest edition addresses the criticisms that have been written on that earlier work.In this book Dr. Meyer addresses Darwin’s Cambrian doubt and builds on his earlier book by pointing out the even greater complexity (by many orders of magnitude) of the specified information required to arrange cells into complex animal body plans, such as the 20 or so new phyla found in the Cambrian layers. Even with deep sea drilling, deep drilling on land and in other forms of exploration, scientists have yet to discover any significant fossils of the supposed ancestors of the Cambrian animals. Dr. J.Y. Chen, a Chinese paleontologist and an expert on the Cambrian era fossil deposits discovered in China, was once asked when presenting his findings at the University of Washington if he wasn’t worried about contradicting Darwin, quipped, “in China we can criticize Darwin, but we can’t criticize the government. In the United States, you can criticize the government, but you can’t criticize Darwin.”As Dr. Meyer points out in this book, “Scientists attempting to explain the origin of life must explain how both information-rich molecules and the cell’s information-processing system arose.” As he further notes, “Whenever we find functional information—Whether embedded in a radio signal, carved in a stone monument such as the Rosetta Stone, etched on a disk, or produced by an origin-of-life scientist attempting to engineer a self-replicating molecule — and we trace that information back to its ultimate source, invariably we come to a mind, not merely a material process.”In “Darwin’s Doubt” Dr. Meyer examines the various theories that attempt to explain the geologically sudden emergence of so many new, fully formed animal body plans, and shows that each theory, however subtly, postulates pre-existing information-rich sources of data upon which their theory is based. For example, scientists have discovered entities called developmental gene regulatory networks (dGRNs) that play a key role in the development of a grown animal from an embryo. Studies have determined that simple random individual changes in the dGRN will destroy the organism. Any changes in one part must be coordinated with changes in the other parts, which again requires an enormous infusion of new information. After examining the many theories that scientists have proposed and demonstrating essentially the same flaw in each of them (i.e., the supposition of a pre-existing source of the complex information required), Dr. Meyer concludes that intelligent design is the only explanation that meets the necessary scientific criteria to truly explain the origin of life and the complex form in which all life exists today. In arriving at that conclusion, he uses the same scientific method used by Charles Darwin and most other scientists trying to understand historical events; that is, the abductive method of inference to the best explanation based on currently known processes. In this case, the known process is that complex, functionally specified information is, in our everyday experience, created only by an intelligent agent. Since no scientific theory has yet been proposed that shows any means other than design by an intelligent agent, Dr. Meyer argues that intelligent design is the best, most scientific explanation available today. This is especially true since all of the other purportedly materialistic naturalistic theories that have been proposed start off by assuming the prior existence of the vast amounts of complex specified information necessary to the existence of any life form. They fail to explain where that information came from in the first place. Intelligent design, and only intelligent design, explains the origin of vast amounts of functionally specified information.

If you are a thinking person and you have ever doubted the existence of God, this book will give you a lot to think about.. Evolution has been debunked for what it really is, a theory, not scientific fact. Thinking people can now know that there is a creator and we no longer have to believe we evolved from nothing starting with a "Big Bang" and continuing by chance. I do not know about anyone else, but I prefer to think I was created and not evolved from a lower form of life on planet earth. I also know that there are many who do not believe or think as I do. All I say is, read the book before you judge.

The more scientists learn about the complexity of life, the more difficult it is to believe in Darwin's theory of evolution. This book presents a compelling case for examining intelligent design as a more plausible source of information in DNA than mutations and selection. It is easy to understand and enjoyable to read.

This is a sequel to Stephen Meyer's first in this area, "Signature In The Cell." It is a continuation of the hypothesis of Intelligent Design in the creation of life on this planet, highlighting the increasing number of problems found in Darwin. Darwin, BTW, was quite aware that his theory of evolution did NOT address the ORIGIN of living cells, only their evolution in response to changing environments and other impacts of nature. Make no mistake, this is not a text of opinion or hypothesis ... it is based on factual evidence found in molecular and chemical biology.
