About the Author

Stefan Fischer studied art history, history and classical archaeology in Münster, Amsterdam and Bonn. In 2009 he completed his doctoral thesis on “Hieronymus Bosch: Malerei als Vision, Lehrbild und Kunstwerk”. His specialist fields are Netherlandish painting of the 15th to the 17th century and museology.

I've purchased my share of Taschen books over the years so I was concerned that this wouldn't be up to the standards of other art book publishers. Once I read a few of the reviews here at Amazon I felt a little better so I placed my order. The other reviews are correct: this is an amazing book.Starting with the outside... its double boxed for protection (mine was shipped in yet another box, something Amazon hasn't been so great about in recent years). The inside printed box, which is basically the same as the cover, is a carrying case making it look almost like a board game. I wouldn't carry it around with the handle for any length of time but its a nice touch and pretty much guarantees that the book inside is well protected.The dust jacket is a nice, thick, textured piece with excellent gold lettering. The printing is excellentThe book itself is printed in Italy (a good sign, at least in my opinion) and is semi-gloss which works well. The various fold out panels are well done. I'm not typically wild about fold out inserts but for Bosch is really is important to see the work in the largest size possible.Overall the book is huge (I forget the term, something like super folio?) so its not something you're going to casually leaf through on your lap. It needs a table but view really is worth this climb in this case. This large format is exactly correct for the detail presented in Bosch paintings.For someone who just enjoys great graphics publishing or simply plain gorgeous books I think this is a must purchase item, especially at $100+ (Amazon's current price). I've purchased comparable quality books for more money so this, to me, is good deal.I've only seen one or two Bosch paintings in person but its clear that you need to take the whole painting into view and you also need the close-up view for the details. With a lot of artists too many close-up views can be annoying if you're not someone into technique. In this case the detailed views are 100% required. This book delivers on all fronts.Most importantly I'm thrilled that a book of this quality and a book this inventive can still find a market these days. It's a venture that I'm happy to support. Excellent job Taschen - this makes up for the many poorly printed volumes I've purchased from you over the years.

As I read all the reviews, it is apparent that the various versions of this fine book are all mixed together by Amazon. This is a review of the Folio size 16 x 12 version weighing more than 10 pounds and clearly labeled as XXL. If you love Bosch this is the version to get especially with favorable discounting. It comes in a beautiful storage box. But beware of retailers shipping this box without extra protection since it is not sufficient to protect the heavy book. Mine was shipped unprotected in a large envelope resulting in damage to a corner of the box and a little wrinkle to the spine. With partial refund I got this masterpiece for $70. The presentation is outstanding on thick glossy paper, with impressive fold outs of key works, which you will not see in smaller editions. However as large as it is the font is still small; I wonder if it is even readable in the smaller editions. And the choice of gold font color on black background is perplexing. Thankfully the majority is black font color on white. It is impossible to read on a lap desk with incline due to weight. And it is unrealistic to read even on a flat table. Thus I have it on a desk with a few books behind it to prop it up on an angle. Bosch is an important artist whose work deserves to be examined in person, yet you can never get close enough in the museums of the world to fully appreciate these surrealistic masterpieces. This volume makes it accessible and Fischer’s narrative is highly readable.

This is a beautiful book. It's an incredibly good bargain. But please check the size, it's a very small (but thick) book. No fold-outs. I love it, I keep it next to me while I work.

Wow. Awesome book with great reproductions of the work of Bosch. I believe it does include all the work by Bosch and the reproductions are large including many detail photos as well. I was inspired to purchase the book after visiting the Prado Museum in Madrid. The book is on sale there but in a smaller format. They did have one copy of this larger one and I was entranced. It was not on sale though. I started searching for it on Amazon and could it. It is very large so while beautiful storage is an issue. So if you don't want a book that will NOT fit on your shelf there are two other editions that are smaller and still feature reproductions of all the painting and same text. But, man, if you really want to revel in the detail of the work you need this edition. Fold out poster size of the Garden of Earthly Delights!

Beware that this edition is only 8 inches tall. The positive reviews on this page are misleading because most of them are actually for the larger, 13-inch version. The paper is high quality but the tiny size doesn't do justice to Bosch's detailed paintings. Always make sure to check the fine print in the "product description" section before ordering art books.

This is an excellent small format edition of a perfect large edition of Complete Works of Hieronymus Bosch by Stefan Fisher. The laser-sharp quality of art reproduction is amazing. The accompanying text is perfect. And the price for this edition is also perfect. Everyone who loves Hieronymus Bosch should get this edition just to be able to look at his works anywhere at home: Other editions (the big and heavy as well as the middle sized one) require specially arranged places to read the text and appreciate the artwork, whereas this smaller edition could be looked at in the privacy of your bed, in the patio chair, or while laying on a couch.... Enjoy!

This is a little bit smaller version of the original large and outstanding edition of the Complete Works of Hieronymus Bosch by Stefan Fisher.The quality of art reproduction is the same, perfect, as well as the accompanying text. Maybe more important, this edition is affordable in terms of price (at least thus far) for the the individuals who love Hieronymus Bosch but cannot afford to buy the original edition.
