Julie C. Van Camp is Professor Emerita of Philosophy at California State University, Long Beach, where she taught philosophy of law and applied ethics. Along with a Ph.D. in philosophy from Temple University, she holds a J.D. from Georgetown University. She has been admitted to the State Bar of California and the District of Columbia Bar. "Ethical Issues in the Courts," by Julie Van Camp, is an excellent tool for students (and others) who are interested in the nature and specifics of the ethical reasoning of the courts. As such, it is especially appropriate for pre-law students. But it is also of value for anyone who is interested in the moral issues and dilemmas that arise in relation to abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, gay rights, environmental and animal rights, freedom of speech and religious freedom, racial discrimination and affirmative action, capital punishment, computer ethics, and so forth. Van Camp has collected edited excerpts from 73 court cases dealing with these issues. In so doing, she provides the student with the most important passages from what would otherwise be tediously long documents. After each court case, the book includes two or three discussion questions, which are appropriate as thought questions, questions for classroom or small group discussion, or even for short written assignments. (I would have liked to have seen more discussion questions, but perhaps space limitations precluded this.) Although this book is fairly short, it is chock-full of useful information.
