Craig Rennebohm has spent at least three days a week walking the streets of [Seattle]. His mission? Helping the chronically homeless people everyone else bustles past. He shepherds people with mental illnesses to doctor appointments. He warms folks up with coffee at Starbucks. And, always, this United Church of Christ minister tries to get some of the 2,000-plus people 'sleeping rough' on any given night into housing. It's slow going." —Laura Vanderkam, USA Today"Souls delivers a multilayered and nuanced discussion of homelessness and mental illness. And, when combined with a theological perspective that emphasizes God's love, Rennebohm's hard-fought-and-won insights into engaging the homeless and creating better systems of care offer refreshing contact points for psychology and religion."—James H. This is a wonderful and challenging book which looks at the important issue of homelessness-one of the defining issues of our day. Moreover, the books reflects on the response of faith based communities to the homeless question. Craig Rennebohm offers some helpful and hopeful comments based on his 25 years of experience in working with the homeless and mentally ill in Seattle. Rennebohm, Director of the Mental Health Chaplaincy describes how churches can be effective in their work with the homeless by creating communities of both compassion and companionship. "Souls in the Hands of a Tender God" (pardon me Jonathan Edwards!) provides a framework for churches which seek to develop mental health ministries, or provide training on the way of companionship. Five core practices are identified in the way of companionship; hospitality, neighboring, sharing the journey side by sir, listening and accompaniment. Inspiring examples are provided from other compassionate communities throughout the world, notably Geel, Lierneux (both from Belgium) and Bobigny, a suburb of Paris. The volume also contains a very helpful bibliography and list of like minded community agencies with web addresses.A great place to start for faith based groups thinking about specific ways to address the key social issues of mental illness and homelessness.

A fantastic book written by a man who himself experienced mental health issues and who now for years has been helping others especially the homeless. Craig's theology is simply stated but complex in his understanding of God. This book is a truly wonderful pearl of great price.

I read this because I am interested in the spiritual aspects of mental illness. Craig Rennebohm inspired me with his compassion as well as his beautiful descriptions of his faith. Anyone reading this book will have a hard time looking past the bedraggled looking men and women who live on the streets.

The book was written by a Christian minister who has depression. Even if you are not of the Christian faith, this book is absolutely worth the read. This little gem is on my top 10 list of best books ever read. Reading this book was life-changing for me. I finally "got" mental illness. Do yourself a favor. Read this book and thank your lucky stars you do not suffer from a brain disorder like the individuals that Rennebohm befriends on the streets of Seattle. Rennebohm is speaking at the 2012 National Alliance for the Mentally Ill Convention in Seattle in June. His call to ministries everywhere to help heal the mentally ill is timely and essential.

I hope that this book will help the United States develop support systems for the mentally ill. The way in which Craig Rennebohm seeks out and befriends the homeless people with mental illness in his Seattle community is awe inspiring.

I haven't read the entire book yet. So far so good.

Jonathan Edwards opposite sequel sermon is "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God." This book offers a gentle side.

Craig Rennebohm, with a history of mental illness, as a young man, becomes a chaplain and companion to many living on the streets of Seattle. Through his eyes we get to see the homeless and mentally ill in a different light. Many of his stories brought me to tears. A group of us, who provide meals for the homeless, used this book as afocus of our discussion group
