I read.this for a class i took on The Odyssey. Maybe someday I'll read the poem. You can see from this how the plots of literature were formed
Great product.
Not what I expected
This is a very readable version of Homer's two epic poems rendered into English prose by Samuel Butler. His ILIAD was originally published in 1898 followed by the ODYSSEY in 1900.Because of the differences between the English language and archaic Greek, both in their word order and (in the case of epic poems) poetic conventions, some translators feel that it is virtually impossible to accurately and comfortably render the ILIAD and ODYSSEY in an acceptable, equivalent English poetic format; hence, they -- as did Samuel Butler -- deliberately use prose to impart the story. For example, Homer did not use rhyme, so any modern version in verse is artificial at best, and some might say, counterfeit at worst. Be that as it may be, Butler's prose version is comfortably readable and true to the spirit and drama, the sweep and grandeur, indeed, the very "feel" of Homer's original. Moreover, it is enjoyable to read. The only thing that some readers might find annoying is Butler's occasional use of equivalent Roman names instead of Greek. Thus, Zeus becomes Jove and Odysseus becomes Ulysses (though, happily, Achilles remains Achilles). Butler did so (as did others of his era) because he felt readers were more familiar with those Roman names. Since all translations (both old and new) have their quirks, this is a comparatively easy one to adjust to. And the plusses of this translation outweigh this particular minus.Samuel Butler's versions are in the public domain; they are, therefore, available for free. The only other public domain freebies of the ILIAD and ODYSSEY worth considering are by Alexander Pope written a century earlier in heroic couplets (rhymed couplets in iambic pentameter). These were definitely NOT used by Homer, but are impressively majestic in English. Compare his poetic version to Butler's prose rendition and you will notice striking differences. (Other public domain freebie versions are awkwardly and uncomfortably rendered; skip them.) There are numerous modern translations worth considering, such as by Lattimore, Fitzgerald, and Fagles -- to name but three of the most notable. The ILIAD and ODYSSEY are works every literate person should be familiar with. Butler's renditions are a good way to get to know them.
Homer's epic poems, the ILIAD and ODYSSEY were written in archaic Greek and, thus, must be translated into modern English for American and British readers. There are many excellent translations available, some rendered as poetry and some (like Butler's) as prose. Why prose? They do so because the structure and syntax of Homer's Greek is very much unlike that of English, and his poetic conventions differ from our own. For example, many English readers (rightly or wrongly) think of rhyme when they think of poetry, and Alexander Pope, in his beloved translations of Homer, used heroic couplets (rhymed lines of iambic pentameter). But Homer did NOT use iambic pentameter, rhyme, or couplets, and -- even IF he did -- his Greek words wouldn't necessarily correspond to appropriate English ones to enable syntactically understandable equivalence. Because of the impossibility of truly equating Homer's poetry into acceptable English, a number of translators -- regarding any such attempt to do so as artificial at best, and counterfeit at worst -- have opted for prose. The use of prose is, thus, not an attempt to "novelize" these two epic poems, nor is it a lesser or somehow illegitimate format. Rather, it strives to truthfully render that which otherwise would not be as truthfully conveyed. (Modern translators, such as Robert Fagles, have opted for free verse as a compromise between prose and poetry; compare his to Richmond Lattimore's more exact, but also much more demanding, version.)Samuel Butler translated the ILIAD in 1898 and the ODYSSEY in 1900 into "modern" English that is very readable today except for one annoying tendency: he converts some -- not all -- Greek names into Roman. (Achilles remains Achilles, but Odysseus becomes Ulysses, Zeus becomes Jove and Hera becomes Juno, etc.) He did so (not unlike others of that era) under the assumption that readers of his day were more familiar with the Roman names. While this may be annoying, it does not impede stylistically on his rendering of these epics into quite comfortable English syntax.Butler's is one of several free public domain translations available, but with the possible exception of Pope's (mentioned above), it is arguably the best of that lot. There are a great many newer ones that are genuinely superior -- though not all new ones are -- but their translations, still under copyright protection and owned by their respective publishers, can be costly. Therefore, Butler's is adequately sound, very readable, and certainly affordable (especially when it's free). It is one all lovers of Homer should at least be familiar with.
The story is classic but the editing mistakes increased throughout the book and became distracting.
